Ding! Round One Goes to...

the pacifier (and sanity)! I was hoping this post would go a little differently, but after a (rather awful) week of trying to go without the pacifier, I've given up. Before we moved, Ethan started throwing the pacifier out of the crib so that, I'm sure, we'd come in and get it for him. Well, I played the game a few times before we moved simply because I wasn't willing to deal with the crying and I wanted the pacifier for the move. After moving and getting settled, and gathering courage, we decided when he threw it out, he was on his own. From that moment on, we didn't use the pacifier at all! For a week, we were strong, we knew that now was as good of time as any for him to learn to sleep without it, but after a week of random successes and regresses, I couldn't take it any more. I gave him the pacifier back. However, one good thing did come of it. He now only throws it out when he's ready to wake up. :) I guess it did serve some purpose. I'm sad that I was so wimpy, but I'm happy that I have my well-rested, happily-sleeping baby back!
(P.S.--Pardon the old photo!)

We used the snip method on Miles. Each day, snip a little off the end of the pacifier. Eventually, he didn't like it any more and he threw it away on his own.

But I think he was older than Ethan.

Good luck with the pacifier. Hunter abandoned it on his own, so I have no advice except stay strong!

I've contemplated forcing Hadlie to give up the one little thing she asks for at night to help her sleep angelically and keeps her parents so blissfully rested. Then, I let my better judgement take over. What was I thinking? Don't feel like you have failed. It is still serving its purpose to help him sleep and it is still preventing SIDS! Win, win! I think I will wait until I feel like Hadlie is ready to handle the separation. I have phased out using it in the car though. Of course it has been replaced by a very sticky fruit leather. Weigh the options first!
